A Practice for Manifesting Your Power in the New Year
As we welcome a new year, it’s natural to think about new beginnings and set goals for what we’d like to manifest in our lives. We may set resolutions, join a gym, create a vision board, or commit to a self-care regime. But our efforts won’t be effective if we don’t first make room in our physical and energetic body for change.
We must let go of the old before we can welcome the new. And the process of manifestation begins in the emotional body.
A woman came to me for a breathwork session because she felt limited by her aging body. She wanted to appreciate her life and her abilities but was frustrated when her body held her back.
Together we turned our attention to her hips and other problem areas and used the breath to connect with the feelings there. Her tears began to flow as she realized she was carrying a lifelong sense of abandonment. She told me about a former husband who would disappear for days with no explanation. She then remembered a beloved uncle who had disappeared from her life when she was young. She later learned he had been killed in an accident; afraid it would upset her, her family chose to not tell her why he was gone. Decades later, the sadness and confusion remained in her body.
Breathwork is a powerful tool for releasing the wounds that we hold in our emotional bodies. Breathing and being present is such a gift; it allows us to honor where we are. And it’s only by surrendering to our feelings and taking the time to feel them fully that we’re able to let them go.
Breathwork moves us from being reactive to proactive.
I’ve heard people say after working with their breath that it’s as effective as years of therapy. I believe that it’s as necessary as taking your car to the shop for an oil change. Anxiety, depression, fear, or pain is your oil light. It’s an invitation to identify whatever is in you and meet it with love.
So in this season of goal-setting, you might ask yourself: how hard am I willing to work for the changes I’d like to manifest?
You can start with a simple daily practice that takes just minutes. This exercise from author and healer Caroline Myss strengthens the first chakra, or root chakra, which holds the energy of your personal power, family ties, sense of safety, and prosperity consciousness.
Allow the truth ‘All is One’ to penetrate your body
Drop your attention to the root of your spine
Feel yourself magnetically connected to every part of life:
The fragrance of the earth
The oceans and rivers
The air
Your family and friends
The planet
Identify your fears for today and pull them into your consciousness.
Acknowledge the strength of the energetic circuitry connecting you to all life.
Connect with your breath as you visualize that strength replacing your fears for today.
